COMMERCIAL ORIGINATION JOB DESCRIPTION                                               Posted:  October 1, 2019

SunEast Development LLC, a major developer of utility-scale solar PV projects in the eastern U.S., seeks an experienced Commercial Origination professional to be based out of our Old Saybrook, CT or Malvern, PA office. This motivated candidate will be responsible for the origination, negotiation, and structuring of commercial offtake contracts, including energy sales, REC sales, bundled product sales, and financial hedges/CFDs for SunEast’s portfolio of utility-scale solar projects in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.


The candidate should possess 3+ years of renewable energy commercial origination experience, plus additional experience in development and/or financing of renewable energy projects.  Skills required for success in this position include strong communication and leadership skills, a focus on detail, effective problem-solving ability, and the ability to work independently to achieve target goals.


  • Research and identify markets and counterparties for potential commercial offtake opportunities for SunEast portfolio projects.

  • Develop and execute a commercial offtake strategy for SunEast’s solar development portfolio in the eastern United States, with a focus on the NYISO, ISO-NE and PJM markets.

  • Identify and engage discussions with high-potential customers, including utilities, municipalities, and corporate counterparties to generate new energy and REC offtake opportunities for portfolio projects.

  • Prepare detailed, high-quality customer-facing materials, including proposals, presentations, spreadsheets, and other documents to support complex energy commodity transactions.

  • Work closely with other development team members to generate new opportunities through research, networking, account profiling, and other market penetration strategies.

  • Develop and utilize internal reporting tools and forms to track timelines and deliverables.

  • Achieve milestones on time and on budget.

  • Travel within North America as necessary to meet with clients, customers, counterparties, investors and other stakeholders.

Job Qualifications:

  •  Minimum of 3 years’ experience in originating, negotiating, and structuring offtake contracts for renewable energy projects, preferably in solar; additional experience in solar project development and/or financing a plus.

  • Detailed knowledge of the eastern-U.S. energy markets, with a focus on NYISO, ISO-NE, and PJM.

  • Bachelor's degree required, with a preference for a finance, business, economics, or similar degree.

  • MBA or other Master’s degree a plus.

  • Strong communication, presentation and computer skills.

  • Ability to travel as required to meet with counterparties, customers, clients, investors and other stakeholders.

  • Good multi-tasking and due-diligence skills.

  • Basic understanding of market strategy and ability to assess market segments.

  • Strong financial acumen, including working knowledge of project-based financial models.


SunEast will offer the successful candidate a competitive salary, incentive bonus, and attractive benefits package.  This position reports directly to the Company President.  Compensation and job title to be determined based on the selected candidate’s background and experience.

Founded in 2012, SunEast Development LLC is a privately held clean energy development company with offices in Old Saybrook, CT and Malvern, PA.  SunEast is managing the development of over 800 MWs of solar projects in ten states.  SunEast manages the full spectrum of the solar development process including strategic site assessment, land origination, project design, interconnection, permitting, offtake contracting, and site engineering for solar projects ranging from 2 MWs to 80 MWs in the New York ISO, ISO New England and the PJM Interconnection markets.


In November 2018, SunEast Development LLC announced the closing of a development capital raise from a private equity fund managed by New Energy Capital Partners, LLC. The capital funding will support the continued development of a 105 MWac solar portfolio acquired by SunEast in June 2018, and further accelerate the company’s solar development and acquisition efforts in the eastern United States with a target portfolio of over 1,000 MW by 2021.
